Journaling: What’s Behind the Photo?

HaircutThis is a cute picture, right? I often use this picture and ask, “What does this picture tell you?” I get: “Cute Girl,” “Playing pretend,” “Girly-girl with ribbons in her hair,” What does it say to you?

Here is the actual story: Kendra Eileen Seuss (not real name-identity protected) in 9/1997. She is doctoring her red pooh bear that her Uncle Ronnie rescued from a garage sale. Ronnie is 9 years older than Kendra. Ronnie said that when he walked up to the garage sale, he “immediately recognized the resemblance to Pooh bear” and knew that his niece would just love it. Kendra’s “medicines” and “medicinal apparatus” come from the open kitchen drawer you see in the background next to the refrigerator. The ribbons and “tail” in her hair signify a fresh haircut courtesy of Kids Club Haircutters in Milpitas. Kendra would certainly NOT let her mother do anything so “fruffy” with her hair. Side note: you can see the ugly kitchen cabinets and floor that almost prompted a remodel, but eventually led to moving to a new home.

So, as you can see, sometimes there is a story behind the photo. Included here is full name, the date, and some context and background. What is daughter doing in the photo? The “fancy” hair is not a normal occurrence. The relationship the girl’s uncle has to her. A little background about the background.

If photos are the heart of your album, words are the soul.  Take a moment to tell the story.
